A Dublin date plan

A free Dublin date: art, a walk and time to talk

Start at the National Gallery of Ireland, wander towards St Stephen’s Green, and finish with an optional coffee. It is a simple daytime date with room to stay longer or head home whenever you like.

Allow: roughly 2–3 hours at an easy pace.

Budget: free for the gallery’s permanent collection and the park. Drinks, transport and some exhibitions cost extra.

Best for: a first date, an unhurried afternoon or a low-cost weekend.

1. Meet at the National Gallery of Ireland

Choose the Merrion Square West or Clare Street entrance and agree on a meeting point before you leave. Admission to the permanent collection is free. Give yourselves around an hour, pick a room or two, and each choose a favourite work to show the other person. You do not need to know anything about art: the point is to have something interesting to notice and talk about together.

The gallery is open most days, with a later Thursday opening. Some temporary exhibitions require paid tickets, so check the gallery’s current hours and admission details before setting off.

2. Walk towards St Stephen’s Green

Leave time to stroll through the city centre at your own pace. St Stephen’s Green is a public park with paths, a lake and places to sit; admission is free. Take a loop if the weather is good, or find a bench for a conversation if you prefer. Allow about 30–45 minutes for the park, and check the official park page for opening information before you go.

3. Make coffee optional

If you both want to continue, choose a café nearby and check its menu before ordering. A drink or snack can keep the afternoon going, but there is no need to buy anything to enjoy the gallery and park. Bring a bottle of water, allow for any transport costs, and agree your spending limit together rather than assuming a café will fit a particular price.

If the weather changes

Spend more time in the gallery and shorten or skip the park. If the gallery has an unexpected closure, check its official updates before travelling and choose another indoor venue only after confirming its opening hours and entry costs. The plan is deliberately flexible: the important part is having a comfortable place to meet and an easy way to continue the date.
